Nanny Life

Who is Heather Poppins and why is she writing a blog?

My name is Heather, however my last name is not Poppins, close but not quite. I am a professional nanny in the sense that being a nanny is my full time profession and has been for 6 years. What started as babysitting for family in my preteens has turned into a love for childcare and hands on involvement in helping children grow.
Now that didn’t mean to turn into the opening line of my typical interview, but hey it’s my first blog post, so start with something familiar, right?

Being a nanny is the best career decision I have made and I have dabbled in many potential careers. I graduated high school and went straight to work in the exciting field of corporate data management <insert underwhelming Woo! here>. After two years of cubicles, computer labs and micromanaging, I needed out. It was then that I chased a dream I had throughout my childhood. I became a certified Bridal Consultant, which was lovely but who is going to hire a twenty year old with only family parties as experience to plan and execute the biggest day of their lives? That’s right, family and friends! So that career got benched and is used for some amazing things in the future.

Now imagine this, being 20 years old and trying to figure out who you are, what makes you happy and how to make that pay your bills. It was in that moment that I decided to fall back onto ol’ reliable and get a fill in job as a “babysitter” to bring in some money while I looked for a fulfilling career! And that is what I did, I took that two month babysitting job to care for two great kids while their family was preparing and coordinating a move from suburbia into the city. Little did I know at the time that my “fill in” job would ignite a flame in my heart that became a true passion of caring for, guiding, building up and helping children become who they are meant to be.
If you decide to stick around, this blog is bound to feature more ramblings like the one above, real kids crafts (that have actually been tried and tested), higher skilled crafts that I do on my own personal time and nanny lessons to help you navigate the confusing and sometimes overwhelming world of nannying!
Respectfully yours,
Heather Poppins
