Star Stitch Messy Bun Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern

My favorite crochet item is a messy bun beanie; they are quick, cute, and easy to personalize. There are a gazillion stitches out there, and I have followed so many patterns for the perfect beanie but sadly never fell in love with one. I wanted something functional and pretty, not one or the other, because here in New England, autumn gets cold fast, and those hats need to last through at least half of spring too.

That’s when I decided I wanted to use my favorite stitch, the star stitch, and in so many colors, I would have a hat for every feeling, outfit, and cold weather occasion. After a few tries of making up my pattern, I think I have nailed it and have shared it below! This pattern might look light a ton of work, but it’s just very in-depth; I like to cover everything! Also, this pattern takes up a bunch of yarn, so be prepared; you may need a second skein.

Now, go ahead give it a shot; let me know what you think and as always, feel free to share it with the sharable buttons on this post! Side Note: I have never written a crochet pattern before, so be gentle and ask any questions that may arise!

This pattern shows a bulky weight yarn and had a finished inner circumference of 23″; however, if you want it a bit more snug, medium-weight yarns works just as well!

Respectfully yours,

Heather Poppins

ROW 1:

Attach your yarn to the elastic by SL ST.

Create 37 SC all the way around; you may need to slide the stitches down by hand to create enough room on the elastic.

Draw a loop through the front post of the bottom CH 2 stitch.

Create the Classic Star Stitch

*Draw a loop through the eye of the previous star.

Draw a loop through the space between the 5th and 6th loop of the previous star.

Draw a loop through the same stitch the 6th loop of the previous star is looped through.

Draw a loop through the next 2 stitches. This should create 6 loops over the hook.

Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops.*

Repeat making the Classic Star Stitch until you finish the row, you should end with 18 Stars.

Once you close your last star finish the row by making a HDC into the same stitch as your star’s 6th loop and then SL ST into the back of the top loop of your starting star.
